Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative neurological ailment that worsens over time and is driven by the loss of brain cells that synthesize a chemical, dopamine, which suffers from a sharp decline from normal levels after such cell reduction. These brain cells are responsible for regulating movement and coordination in a person. This means the deterioration in dopamine-generating brain cells results in movement-related issues.
Parkinson’s disease physical symptoms include abnormal and involuntary physical movements like tremors and shivering, rigidity, muscle stiffness, slower movements, etc. Some of the psychological symptoms include anxiety, low self-esteem, sadness, depression, memory loss, difficulty organizing and planning, and for some people, dementia. These symptoms not only affect a person’s ability to manage everyday activities but also impacts his/her mental health.
